Meta Ban RT And Other Russian State Media: "Deceptive Tactics" Prompt Global Crackdown
Meta takes action against Russian state-controlled media, banning them from its platform to prevent future deceptive tactics and potential harm to users.
Meta Ban RT And Other Russian State Media
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced a ban on Russian state media outlets, including RT (formerly Russia Today) and Rossiya Segodnya, across its platforms. The company alleges that these networks have employed deceptive strategies to execute covert influence campaigns online.
“After careful consideration, we expanded our ongoing enforcement against Russian state media outlets. Rossiya Segodnya, RT and other related entities are now banned from our apps globally for foreign interference activity,” a Meta spokesperson said in a statement.
This decision comes in light of the fact that two RT employees were charged with money laundering earlier this month in the United States. Officials claim the scheme involved contracting an American firm to produce content aimed at swaying the 2024 election.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken remarked on Friday that Russian state broadcaster RT’s activities should be treated similarly to covert intelligence operations.
